A. Glenn Mower, Jr.
A. Glenn Mower, Jr., a resident of Pleasant Gap since 2013, died January 12, 2015, at The Oaks.
The son of A. Glenn Mower and Alma Irene Weber, Glenn was born on June 22, 1918, in Mechanicsburg where he attended public school. As a member of the class of 1936, he edited the school paper, played on the school’s first championship basketball team and participated in the school’s music, dramatic and student government programs. He was married on November 20, 1939, to high school classmate Anne Cocklin.
Glenn was a graduate of Dickinson College, where he was a member of the Theta Chi National and Skull and Key social fraternities and Theological Society. He received a Theological degree from the Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Political Science from Johns Hopkins University and Pennsylvania State University, respectively.
While serving United Methodist Church pastorates in Elysburg, Airville, Danville, Jersey Shore, and Milesburg, Glenn was a member of a number of boards and the secretarial staff of the then Central Pennsylvania Annual Conference and held leadership positions in Conference youth camps.
Glenn joined the faculty of Illinois Wesleyan University in Political Science in 1957, and five years later assumed the same position at Hanover College in Indiana, where he served until his 1981 retirement and move to State College. His academic career included membership in the American Society of International Law, the International Studies Association and The American Political Science Association.
The author of numerous articles on international affairs in professional journals in six countries and anthologies Glenn also authored six books in this field. As a writer his area of specialization was the protection of human rights through international organizations.
Glenn is survived by his wife; a daughter, Judith Evelyn Garee, Bloomington, Il; two sons, Steven Alan, State College and Alfred Glenn, III, Carmel, IN; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made in Glenn’s name to a charity of the donor’s choosing.
