Alexander “Alex” Charles Schafer, Jr.

Alexander “Alex” Charles Schafer, Jr., age 95, of Mechanicsburg, and formerly of Silver Spring, MD, died on Tuesday, March 3, 2020. Alex born on Wednesday, December 31, 1924 in Troy, NY to the late Alexander Charles Schafer, Sr. and Caroline (Boehringer) Schafer. In addition to his parents, Alex is preceded in death by his brother, Karl Schafer.
Alex’s survivors include his loving wife of 74 years, Marion Anna (Ferris) Schafer; his three sons: Norman Karl Schafer and his wife, Brenda, of Silver Spring, MD, Mark Ferris Schafer and his wife, Joette, of Mechanicsburg, Alexander C. Schafer, III and his wife, Christianne, of Advance, NC; his seven grandchildren: Mora Weaks, Charlie Schafer, Andrew Schafer, James Schafer, Allison Schafer, Kristy Kennedy, Amanda Schaffer; his six great-grandchildren: Henry, Charlie, Laira, Colleen, Carter, Alexa; and his sister, Dorothy Treharne of Durango, CO.
Alex graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a degree in chemical engineering. He proudly served in in the United States Navy as an officer during World War II. Alex spent most of his career working as a professional engineer in the nuclear power industry. He was a member of Shiremanstown United Methodist Church. Alex loved to bake and his homemade “Grandpa’s Rolls” became a family tradition that has been passed down to many generations. Another favorite pastime Alex enjoyed was playing golf.
All are welcome to join Alex’s family at his gathering of family and friends on Saturday, March 14, 2020, from 1:00 p.m. until time of memorial service at 2:00 p.m. at Buhrig Funeral Home & Crematory, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Rev. Dr. Brand W. Eaton officiating. Alex’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at Buhrig’s Gathering Place (next to the funeral home) immediately following the service. Cremation was private.
The family sends their most heartfelt thanks to all the staff of Bethany Village’s MapleWood Assisted Living and The Oaks Skilled Nursing neighborhoods for their loving care provided to Alex during the past five years.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in celebration of Alex’s life can be made to Shiremanstown United Methodist Church, 125 East Main Street, Shiremanstown, PA 17011 or Bethany Village Benevolent Care Fund, 325 Wesley Drive, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.
