Alfred “Al” H. Grundon
A True Gentleman -
Alfred “Al” H. Grundon, age 88, of Mechanicsburg, and formerly of Lemoyne, passed away on Monday, March 5, 2018. Al was born on Wednesday, March 6, 1929 in Harrisburg to the late Herbert R. Grundon, Sr. and Esther V. (Mehaffie) Grundon. Al was the widower of Betty J. (Firestone) Grundon, whom he married on April 4, 1958, and who died on April 4, 2008 and of Sarah “Sally” Blair, whom he married on November 14, 2010, and who died on August 14, 2017. In addition to his parents and wives, Al is preceded in death by his son, Alfred H. Grundon, Jr.; his three brothers: Herbert R. Grundon, Jr., Richard E. Grundon, Donald P. Grundon; his sister, Nancy (Grundon) Fox; and his son-in-law, Terry Welchans.
Al’s survivors include his daughter, Donna Welchans of New Cumberland; his three grandsons: Erik Welchans and his wife, Beth, of Lancaster, Shawn Welchans and his wife, Ashley, of Missoula, MT, Matthew Grundon of Florida; his five great-grandchildren: Hailey, Hannah, Abigail, Skylar, Kashus; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Al graduated from John Harris High School as president of the class of 1947. He began working in his family’s business, Grundon’s Bakery, in Harrisburg for 20 years. Al then worked for the Professional Insurance Agents of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware as the vice president of member services. He retired from the National Association of Professional Insurance Agents in Alexandria, VA, after many years of service working as a vice president of member services. After his retirement, Al worked winters at the Pennsylvania State Farm Show. Al was a longtime member of Pine Street Presbyterian Church in Harrisburg, where he served as an elder. He was a former member of the Hershey Racquet Club, Hershey Country Club, and board member of the Harrisburg YMCA. Al was also a former member and treasurer of the Harrisburg Exchange Club and Lemoyne Sewer Authority. He enjoyed boating on the Susquehanna River for 40 years and flower gardening, which Al continued to do while living at Bethany Village. Al was known for baking special birthday cakes and over 100 dozen Christmas cookies and chocolate covered pretzels that he enjoyed giving away to family and friends each year.
All are welcome to join Al’s family at his memorial service on Thursday, March 15, 2018, beginning at 11:00 a.m. in the Community Room at Bethany Village East, 325 Bethany Drive, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Reverend Anne Myers officiating. Al’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship with a greeting of guests immediately following the service. Burial in Rolling Green Cemetery in Camp Hill will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
