Alfred “Al” L. Whalen

A Friendly and Funny Guy -

Alfred “Al” L. Whalen, age 88, of Mechanicsburg, and formerly of Shamokin, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 1, 2019.  Al was born on Monday, April 13, 1931 in Shamokin to the late Robert Emmett Whalen and Edith (Lindemuth) Whalen.  Al was the widower of Nancy Lee (Schmidt) Whalen, whom he married on October 8, 1960, and who died on May 3, 2011.  In addition to his parents and wife, Al is preceded in death by his brother, Robert Whalen; and his three sisters: Geraldine Jilinski, Laverne Dressler, and Florence Higgins.

Al’s survivors include his two children: Robert C. Whalen and his wife, Yvonne, and their two sons: Shane and Brendan, of Orlando, FL, Carol Diller and her husband, Roy, and their daughter, Megan, of Dillsburg; his sister, Bernice Milbrand of Shamokin; and several nieces and nephews.

Al graduated from Shamokin High School as a part of the class of 1949.  He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.  Al retired from Bell Telephone Company, after over 30 years of service working as a supervisor.  He attended Chestnut Grove United Methodist Church in Dillsburg.  Al was a member of the Eureka-West Shore Lodge No. 302, longstanding member of the Mechanicsburg Club, and lifetime member of the Lower Allen VFW Post 7530.  He was a great pool shooter and also enjoyed golfing, fishing, and working on cars.  Al always looked forward to the time spent with his wife, especially when the two visited casinos together.  He most cherished the time spent with his grandchildren and attending Megan’s volleyball games, he went to as many at home as he could.  Everyone that met Al liked him; he was a very friendly and funny guy.  He will be missed by all those that knew him.

All are welcome to join Al’s family on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at his open house with food and fellowship starting at 12:00 p.m., with his memorial service starting at 2:00 p.m., all at Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055. Interment in Rolling Green Cemetery will be private and at the convenience of the family.  Cremation was private.
