Alice “Freda” Alfreda (Walker) Hess, 94, of Mechanicsburg, died peacefully at Holy Spirit Hospital on Saturday, August 31, 2013. She was born in Harrisburg, on Sunday, March 16, 1919 daughter of the late Franklin K. Walker and Helen (Bostdarf) Walker. Freda was the widow of Myron W. Hess whom she married on December 5, 1953 and who died on October 2, 2000.
Freda’s survivors include her loving nephews, James “Jim” B. Walker and his wife Linda of Enola, Jeffrey “Jeff” L. Walker and his wife Nicki of Florida, John R. Walker and his wife Bonnie of Mechanicsburg, David A. Walker and his wife Mary of Mechanicsburg; her brother, Richard Walker of Lemoyne; her step-daughter, LeVay Terraneo of New Jersey; and numerous great and great-great nieces, nephews and grandchildren. Among those preceding Freda in death are her brothers, Howard Walker and Robert Walker.
Freda graduated from William Penn High School as part of the class of 1937. She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Mechanicsburg, where she was a member of and deeply loved her Sunday School Class . In her later years, Freda also attended Immanuel Christian & Missionary Alliance Church in Mechanicsburg, where she always felt welcome. She retired from Bell Telephone , after a long career. Prior to Bell Telephone, Freda worked at the former Greene’s Department Store on Market Street in Harrisburg where she was a supervisor. Her early retail experience served her well later in life as a 30 plus year volunteer at the Messiah Village Gift Shop where she served in many roles including as a buyer and organizing the displays. Traveling was a special treat for Freda whose favorite trips were to Hawaii. An independent and self reliant woman, Freda was very social and greatly enjoyed visiting with those she encountered.
All are welcome to join Freda’s family at both her viewing on Thursday, September 5, 2013 from 11:45 to 12:45 and her service to begin at 1:00 in the Messiah Village Chapel , 100 Mount Allen Drive, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, with Pastor Michael V. Minnix officiating. Freda’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of refreshments and fellowship in the Messiah Village Compass Pointe Place immediately following the service. Burial will follow at 3:00 in Rolling Green Memorial Park in Camp Hill.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Messiah Village Endowment Fund , 100 Mount Allen Drive, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055. The family sends their most heartfelt thanks to everyone at Messiah Lifeways at Messiah Village who so lovingly cared for Freda.
