Arthur “Art” Glenwood Martin
High School Diploma at Age 87 -
Arthur “Art” Glenwood Martin, 90, of Mechanicsburg , died at Spring Creek Rehabilitation and Health Care Center on Thursday, February 14, 2013. He was born in Dillsburg, on Tuesday, June 6, 1922, son of the late Charles Martin and Margaret (Hoffman) Martin. Art was the widower of Katherine “Kitty” Helen (Fleckenstein) Martin who died on February 13, 1999, and whom he married on January 14, 1947.
Art’s survivors include his nephews, William “Bill” Reynolds and his wife Margie of Mechanicsburg, Robert Reynolds of Mechanicsburg; his nieces, Doris Berger of Dillsburg, Shirley Fake of Mechanicsburg; and several more nieces and nephews. Among those preceding Art in death are his three brothers, Lawrence, Norman and Lester Martin; and his five sisters, Margaret Trout, Katherine Zimmerman, Helen Reynolds, Freda Smith, and Martha Markle.
Art retired from UA Plumbers, Pipefitters and HVACR Local Union 520 in Harrisburg. He was proud to be one of the plumbers who helped build Cumberland Valley High School . Art was a member of Christian Life Assembly Church in Camp Hill and VFW Post 6704 in Mechanicsburg. He proudly served in the US Army during WWII in the 762 nd Bomb Squadron, 460 th Bomb Group . As a gunner in the belly of an Army Bomber, Art survived a jump after being shot down during his 29 th Mission . He excitedly received his high school diploma at the age of 87. Art loved baseball and football, particularly the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles . One of his greatest accomplishments was writing his autobiography which he titled, The Life of Arthur G. Martin: From the Cradle to the Grave .
Art’s services and then burial in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Dillsburg will be private and at the family’s convenience. The family suggests memorial contributions to a veterans’ organization of the donor’s choosing.
