A Very Simple Woman -

Betty Jane (Ness) Danko, age 92, of York, and formerly of Churchtown, passed away on Friday, April 21, 2017.  Betty was born on Saturday, December 6, 1924 in York to the late Cornelius Vanderbilt Ness and Dorothy (Geesey) Ness.  Betty was the widow of Steven Danko, whom she married on September 12, 1970, and who died on November 8, 1993.  In addition to her parents and husband, Betty is preceded in death by her daughter, Sharon Keefe; a grandson, Jack Ness Gilbert, Jr.; a great-grandson, Jack Ness Gilbert, III; her two brothers: Warren Ness, Raymond Ness; and her husband, Kenneth Wise Gilbert.

Betty’s survivors include her son, Jack Ness Gilbert and his wife, Cindy, of York; her four grandchildren; her six great-grandchildren; her two great great-grandchildren; her two sisters: Anna Koons of York, Diana Lee Backus and her husband, John, of Delaware; and several nieces and nephews.

Betty retired from Meg’s Macaroni Company in Harrisburg, after many years of service working as a laborer.  She was a member of Christ the Saviour Orthodox Church in Harrisburg since 1968.  Betty was a member of the American Legion Post #109 in Mechanicsburg where she served on the ladies auxiliary and of the Fleet Reserve Association.  Betty was a feisty woman who loved everyone she met.  She enjoyed sewing, doing crafts, and gardening with her husband.  Betty also liked watching television and caring for animals, which she loved dearly.  She didn’t worry about worldly things because she was a plain and simple woman.  Betty loved her family deeply and they will remember her fondly, especially how wonderful of a cook she was.

All are welcome to join Betty’s family at her viewing on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, from 12:30 p.m. until time of service at 1:45 p.m. at Myers - Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Fr. Stephen Vernack officiating.  Burial will follow in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens in Carlisle.  Honored to be pallbearers are Kenny McClane, Bill Pepo, Gary Shifflet, Ryan Gilbert, Dax Ness, and Jeremy Goodling.  Betty’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at Monroe Fire Company, 1225 Peffer Road, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, following the burial.

The family sends their most heartfelt thanks to everyone at York Hospital who so lovingly cared for Betty during her illness.
