Betty Jean (McClain) Flanagan, age 90, of Shiremanstown, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 6, 2017. Betty was born on Monday, August 15, 1927 in Trough Creek to the late Dwight V. McClain and Pearl E. (Stapleton) McClain. Betty was the widow of Michael E. Flanagan, whom she married on March 12, 1948, and who died on July 20, 1985. In addition to her parents and husband, Betty is preceded in death by her three brothers: Gilbert McClain, Winston McClain, Kevin McClain; and her two sisters: Edna “Cricket” Hall and Joanna Beth Edwards
Betty’s survivors include her two daughters: Deborah “Deb” Flanagan of Shiremanstown, Lisbeth “Betsy” Brommer and her husband, Clarence “Skip”, of Allentown; her two grandsons: Paul Brommer of Harrisburg, Aaron Brommer of Lewes, DE; her four brothers: Thomas McClain of Hesston, Richard McClain of Cassville, Barry McClain of Mt. Union, Steve McClain of Trough Creek; her two sisters: Dorothy Heaster of Mapleton Depot, Jennie Johnson of Hesston; many nieces and nephews; and her two feline companions: Bebee and Heidi.
Betty graduated from Mt. Union High School and from Lock Haven University where she achieved her undergraduate degree in Health and Physical Education. She went on to graduate from Shippensburg University with a Master’s Degree in Counseling. Betty retired from the Mechanicsburg School District, after 20 years as a health and physical education teacher. She was a longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Shiremanstown, where she was member of charity quilting group. Betty enjoyed volunteering her time and sharing her gift of teaching. She was a tutor at the literacy center and a volunteer grandmother for a local elementary school.
Betty remained active up until her 90 th birthday by going to the gym and line dancing. She loved to walk, exercise, laugh, sew, and dance, particularly square and line dancing. Betty will be remembered for her many passions in life and how she shared those with everyone around her.
Betty’s family will be remembering her life privately. Interment in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville will be at the family’s convenience. Cremation was private.
