Betty Jane Oldham
A Talented Cook -
Betty Jane Oldham, age 94, of Dillsburg, and formerly of Harrisburg and Bedford County, passed away peacefully while being comforted by her family on Thursday, January 9, 2020. Betty was born on Saturday, June 27, 1925 in West St. Clair Township to the late Norman Nathan Oldham and Florence “Dolly” Irene (Burkett) Oldham. In addition to her parents, Betty is preceded in death by three sisters: Mary Appleby, Catherine Smith, and Elizabeth Stoner.
Betty’s survivors include her six sisters: Virginia M. Appleby of Newburg, Dorothy L. Bert of Newburg, Norma Ruth Bert of Chambersburg, Esther M. Musser of Lurgan, Anna Mae Zinn of Shippensburg, Alice Grace Brantner and her husband, Carl, of Lurgan; her longtime friend, Jane Monn of Dillsburg; and many nieces and nephews.
Betty worked as a United Telephone Operator for 19 years in Bedford County and then as a cook, first at the Messiah Home followed by Homeland, both in Harrisburg. She was a longtime member of Harrisburg Brethren in Christ Church, where she was very involved in various activities and where she shared her gifts, especially cooking. Betty enjoyed crocheting, sewing, quilting, and visiting with her family and friends. She was known for her talent with a lifetime of experience when it came to cooking. Betty will be certainly missed by all that knew her.
All are welcome to join Betty’s family at her gathering of family and friends on Friday, January 17, 2020 at Harrisburg Brethren in Christ Church, 2217 Derry Street, Harrisburg, PA 17104. There will be a time to visit with the family from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service. The service will be held at 11:30 a.m., with Pastor Lynda Gephart and Pastor Woody Dalton officiating. Betty’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at her church immediately following the service. Interment in Fishertown Cemetery in Schellsburg, Bedford County, will be held at a later date.
