Loving and Generous -

Betty (MacDonald) Thompson, age 90, of Mechanicsburg , died at Messiah Lifeways, surrounded by her loving family, on Sunday, October 5, 2014.  Betty was born on Sunday, May 18, 1924 in Evanston, IL to the late David James MacDonald and Elizabeth (Lawson) MacDonald.  Betty was the widow of Ralph Wesley Thompson, whom she married on August 4, 1945, and who died on June 22, 2014.

Betty’s survivors include her sons: David W. Thompson and his wife, Joyce, of Waynesboro, Edward J. Thompson and his wife, Nancy, of Clarks Summit; her grandchildren: Brian Thompson of State College, Michael Smiley and his wife, Tammie, of Waynesboro, Michele Sims of Waynesboro; her great-grandchildren: Mark Watson, Lindsey Main, James Gladhill, Joshua Sims, Makayla Smiley, and Nicholas Sims; and several nieces and nephews.

Betty attended Evanston Township High School and graduated from Warren Township High School as part of the class of 1942.  She was a charter member of Saint Peter Lutheran Church in Mechanicsburg , where she was active in the church council, luncheons, and peanut butter egg-making.  Betty volunteered at the Joseph T. Simpson Public Library in Mechanicsburg for many years.  Betty was “Queen Mum” with the “Tea Cozies” Red Hat Society, and she enjoyed playing cards and working voting polls.  Family was very important to Betty, and she loved people.  Betty’s family remembers her as a loving, generous, honest, and tough, but fair person.

All are welcome to join Betty’s family at her gathering of family and friends on Saturday, October 11, 2014, from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Peter Lutheran Church , 130 Nittany Drive, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Pastor Russell Mueller officiating. Betty’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at her church following the service.

Cremation and interment in Rolling Green Memorial Park will be private and at the convenience of the family.
