Burton E. Hofer, 94, passed away on Friday, April 26, 2024. Born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania on October 7, 1929, he was the last of three children of Frank N. Hofer Sr. and Dorothy M. Hofer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Peggy in 2018, his son James, his brother Frank Jr., and his sister Beverly D. Karschner.
Burt is survived by his daughter, Mary C. Farris of Mechanicsburg, daughter-in-law Barbara Hofer, two grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and six great great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Burt was a 1947 graduate of Williamsport High School, served in the Army during the Korean War in the occupation of Germany. After returning home he was employed by Bell Telephone of Pennsylvania for 30 years, where he met his wife, Peggy Gill. After the breakup of A.T.&T., he was employed by A.T.&T. as a systems consultant for 6 years before his retirement in Dec. 1989. After retirement he worked in the 1990 National census and during the Christmas holidays he worked at Kathie’s Christmas.
Burt was a 50+ year member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Camp Hill where he served on church council, Trinity’s adult choir, the men of Trinity group as president & treasurer, and tape ministry chairman. He also served as evangelism chairman for the West Shore Lutheran District for Lutheran Churches.
Burt was an active 32° Mason, a 60+ year member of Eureka West Shore Lodge #302, a 60+ year member of the Harrisburg Consistory serving as member registration chairman and was a recipient of the meritorious service award. He also was a former member of Zembo Temple and the Zembo Oriental Band. Burt was also a member of the Mechanicsburg Place Senior Center where he enjoyed their activities, especially playing billiards with his friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Bethesda Mission, or On Eagles Wings.
