Carol Eileen (Gabner) Bender, age 79, of Duncannon , and formerly of Newport, Enola, and Mechanicsburg , died at home and surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, January 13, 2015. Carol was born on Tuesday, March 26, 1935 in Harrisburg to the late Joseph F. Gabner, Sr. and Alice L. (McCahan) Gabner. Carol was the widow of Stanley Frederick Bender, whom she married on May 22, 1953, and who died on May 9, 1997. In addition to her parents and husband, Carol is preceded in death by her daughter, Carol Eileen Kabakjian; her siblings: Joseph Gabner, William Gabner, Paul Gabner, Walter Gabner, Alice “Bootsie” McClain, and two infant sisters.
Carol’s survivors include her daughter, Audrey Louise (Bender) Lyter of Mechanicsburg; her grandchildren: Scott Martz of Duncannon, Joshua Lyter of Shermans Dale, Catherine “Katie” Lyter of Mechanicsburg; her great-grandchildren: Zachary Lyter of Newport, Jackson Lyter of Newport, Leo Cosner; and her brothers: Jim Gabner of Grantville and Don Gabner of Middletown.
Carol’s favorite pastimes included crocheting, playing Bingo and cards. She was a jokester who loved Elvis and liked to travel to the Delaware and Maryland beaches. Carol’s family remembers her being the best mother she knew how to be, and they will miss her unique way of expressing her love.
Carol’s family will be celebrating her life privately. Interment in Mechanicsburg Cemetery will be at the family’s convenience. Cremation was private.
