Catherine “Cass” Margaret (Shillingsburg) Cardella, age 96, of Harrisburg, and formerly of Norwood, passed away on Monday, January 1, 2018. Cass was born on Wednesday, September 7, 1921 in Philadelphia to the late John Jacob Shillingsburg and Margaret (Kelly) Shillingsburg. Cass was the widow of Joseph “Joe” Richard Cardella, Sr., whom she married on April 24, 1946, and who died on January 20, 1993. In addition to her parents and husband, Cass is preceded in death by her two brothers: John Shillingsburg and Joseph Shillingsburg.
Cass’s survivors include her four children: Joseph “Joe” Cardella, Jr. and his wife, Nancy, of Media, Kathleen “Kathy” Leonard and her husband, Steve, of Mechanicsburg, John “Jack” Cardella and his wife, Wanda, of Lebanon, Marguerite “Marge” Walsh and her husband, Bill, of Paulsboro, NJ; her seven grandchildren; her several great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Maria Shillingsburg; and several nieces and nephews.
Cass had a knack for crocheting and won awards for her creations which included: quilts, afghans, dresses, dolls, and bears. She was an excellent cook who was known for her soups and turkey dinners with all the fixin’s. It seemed that everything she made was a specialty. Cass loved to play bingo and garden and she never drove a car or flew in a plane. She was a master letter writer and enjoyed the art of hand writing a note. She began painting at the age of 90 and won awards for her beautiful artwork. Cass was devoted to her family and especially to her brother, Joe. They shared a deep and meaningful sibling love that grew over the years and extended to Joe’s wife, Maria, who Cass thought of as her sister.
All are welcome to join Cass’s family at her viewing on Saturday, January 6, 2018, from 9:30 a.m. until time of casket closing at 10:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial starting at 10:30 a.m. all at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 410 East Simpson Church, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with The Reverend Thomas J. Rozman celebrating. All are also welcome to attend Cass’s graveside service which will begin at 3:00 p.m. in Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon, PA. Those attending the burial are asked to meet the Myers – Buhrig hearse near the Holy Cross Cemetery office at 2:45 p.m.
