Ye Must Be Born Again -
Charles James Brown, Jr., 90, of Mechanicsburg , and formerly of Easton , died at Claremont Nursing & Rehabilitation on Sunday, February 2, 2014. He was born in Easton, on Monday, December 31, 1923, son of the late Charles J. Brown, Sr. and Mildred (Schlough) Brown. Charles was the widower of Sarah L. (Shallick) Brown whom he married on January 4, 1943 and who died March 15, 2011.
Charles’s survivors include his loving daughters, Darlene Rhodes and her husband Jim of Mechanicsburg, Eloise Shaffer and her husband Ken of Quakertown; grandchildren, Debra Eidem, Melissa Starr, Rebecca McGarvey, Jeremy Shaffer, Christopher Shaffer; great-grandchildren, Alyssa McGarvey, Amber McGarvey, Kayla Starr, Katie Eidem, Kara Starr, AJ McGarvey, Brooke Shaffer; his siblings, Katherine Picone of Easton, Christine Sonn and her husband Martin of Easton, Doris Washburn and her husband Robert of Easton, Audrey Steible of Easton and Carl Brown and his wife Jane.
Charles graduated from Wilson Area High School as part of the class of 1942. He retired from Follett Corporation in Easton, after 25 years of service working as a service manager. After retirement, Charles owned and operated a tool sharpening and lawn care business in Spring Hill, Florida. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Mechanicsburg, and a former member of Fellowship Church in Phillipsburg, NJ where he served as an elder and Sunday school teacher. Charles was a US Army Veteran of WWII serving in the European, Middle Eastern and African Theatres, where he was awarded a medal with 2 Bronze Stars, one for the Battle of the Bulge. He enjoyed wood working, feeding the ducks with his grandchildren, and making birthday cards for all the residents at Bent Creek where he resided for several years. Charles was a great father who just adored his grandchildren. He loved the Lord and will always be remembered for his “Ye must be born again” quote to everybody he met.
All are welcome to join Charles’s family at his viewing on Monday, February 10, 2014, from 10:00 until time of service at 11:00 a.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church , 4681 East Trindle Road, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, with Pastor Steve Crews officiating. Burial will follow in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, where military honors will be presented. Charles’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at his church following the burial.
