Charles “Smitty” Edward Smith Sr, age 90, of Mechanicsburg, PA died peacefully on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at Holy Spirit Hospital. Smitty was born on Saturday, July 8, 1933, in the Bronx, New York to the late Charles E. Smith and Rose (Bearens) Smith.
Smitty’s survivors include his wife of 62 years, Anna May (Sullivan) Smith; his five children: Charles E. Smith Jr (“Chip”) and his wife, Lisa, of Mechanicsburg, PA; Rosemary Harrington and her husband, Bill, of Gibsonia, PA; Michael J. Smith and his wife, Nicole, of Duncansville, PA; Daniel R. Smith and his wife, Michelle, of White Plains, NY; Anne Marie Weller and her husband, Michael, of Easton, MD; his eight grandchildren: Michael Harrington; Robert Harrington and his wife Mandy; David Harrington; Alyxandria Brown and her husband Cade; Colleen Smith; Caroline Smith; Thomas Weller; Tess Weller and his great-grandson Silas Brown.
Smitty graduated from De La Salle Institute and Fordham University (class of 1955) in New York City. He served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and worked as a civilian for 32 years for the U.S. Navy in both Bayonne, NJ and Mechanicsburg, PA. After his retirement from the Navy, he worked for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in the Department of Revenue in Harrisburg, PA. He was a long-time and active member of St. Joseph Church in Mechanicsburg, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and a leader in the Leisure Group. In retirement, Smitty performed in over 30 plays in the Harrisburg area, most frequently at Oyster Mill Playhouse in Camp Hill.
All are welcome to join Smitty’s family at his viewing on Thursday, May 9, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Buhrig Funeral & Cremation, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055. Mass will begin at 1:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 400 East Simpson Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Reverend Kenneth C. Roth officiating. Smitty’s graveside service and burial will begin at 2:30 p.m. in St. John’s Cemetery, 4605 East Trindle Road, Mechanicsburg, PA 17050. Smitty’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and remembrance at Buhrig’s Gathering Place (next to the funeral home) immediately following the burial.
