Charles “Dick” Richard Bennett, age 84, of Mechanicsburg, died at Bethany Village on Tuesday, April 12, 2016. Dick was born on Saturday, January 23, 1932, in Middletown, PA to the late Charles Clyde Bennett and Elizabeth (Woods) McClay. In addition to his parents, Dick is preceded in death by his sister, Helen Emanuel.
Dick’s survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Mary Elizabeth (Fern) Bennett; his daughter, Ivy Greenawalt and her husband, Jeffrey, of Gettysburg; his three sisters-in-law: Margaret, Darlene, and Christine; his three brothers-in-law: Charles, Paul, and Keith; his 18 nieces and nephews; and his nine great- nieces and nephews.
Dick graduated from Shippensburg High School as part of the class of 1950 and then attended Hershey Prep. He joined the United States Navy and proudly served during the Korean Conflict. Dick was the founder and president of DriveKore in Mechanicsburg, retiring on April 20, 1988. He was a member of Young’s United Methodist Church in Mechanicsburg since 2015 where he always enjoyed the wonderful music. He used to serve as a communion steward at Scotland United Methodist Church and would assist with Bible School. Dick was a life member of the Lower Allen VFW Post 7530 and of the Mechanicsburg Club. He was a former member of the American Legion, Harrisburg Country Club, and Lone Palm Golf Club. Dick loved to play cards, especially with his DriveKore deck of cards, and to golf and he always enjoyed listening to people sing. He will be deeply missed.
All are welcome to join Dick’s family at his memorial service on Monday, April 18, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. at Bethany Village Community Center, 325 Wesley Drive, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055. Dick’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of gathering and refreshments, where the family will greet guests, immediately following the memorial service. Interment will be on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, where military honors will be presented. Cremation was private.
