Chester “Chet” Heikel, Jr., age 77, of Enola, and formerly of Mechanicsburg and Shiremanstown, went home, surrounded by family, to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 3, 2016. Chet was born on Monday, August 22, 1938 in Harrisburg to the late Chester Lee Heikel, Sr. and Ruth Romaine (Termin) Heikel.
Chet’s survivors include his wife of 54 years, Sharon Marie (Batdorf) Heikel; his three children: Cory L. Heikel and his wife, Amanda, of Mechanicsburg, Kelly M. Carl and her husband, Daniel, of Dover, Nicole Robinson and her husband, David, of Harrisburg; his ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren: Jeremy Heikel and his wife, Tara, and their sons, Jackson and Ethan, Ian Heikel and his wife, Tiffany, and their son, Watson, Danielle (Carl) Rebert and her husband, Luke, and their sons, Ryder and Raidyn, Sean Heikel, Keenan Carl, Caden Robinson, Ellianna Robinson, Christian Robinson, Mackenzie Heikel, Leah Heikel; and his seven siblings: Ruth, Jim, Helen “Peach,” Eve, Dan, Jack, Kate; and many nieces and nephews.
Chet graduated from East Pennsboro High School as part of the class of 1956, and after graduation, he served in the United States Air Force. He retired from the Pennsylvania Public Welfare Department in Harrisburg on August 21, 1998. Chet was a long time member of Shiremanstown First Church of God, where he sang in the choir, served as a deacon and on the church council. He was a member of the Lower Allen VFW Post 7530 in Mechanicsburg and the Lion’s Club of Shiremanstown.
Chet was very active in Little League Baseball in Mechanicsburg and Shiremanstown as a coach and umpire. He also coached girls softball and football. Chet enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, golfing, boxing, and almost every other sport. He was a part of the El Shaddai singers and even sang at Carnegie Hall. Chet’s family will miss his fun-loving nature.
All are welcome to join Chet’s family at his viewing on Thursday, January 7, 2016, from 11:30 a.m. until time of service at 1:00 p.m. at Shiremanstown First Church of God, 35 South Locust Street, Shiremanstown, PA 17011; with Reverend Floyd R. Carlen, Reverend David H. Robinson, and Pastor Cory L. Heikel officiating.
Burial will follow in Rolling Green Cemetery in Camp Hill, where military honors will be presented by the Cumberland County Honor Guard. Honored to be pallbearers are: Jim Heikel, Jeremy Heikel, Ian Heikel, Randy Kinsey, Daniel Carl, Keenan Carl, Dan Heikel, and Jack Heikel.
Chet’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at his church following the burial.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Mechanicsburg Little League Association for scholarship assistance. Flowers last a few days, but the lessons of teamwork and discipline last a lifetime. Their address is 211 North Arch Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.
