Donald Lee Thorpe, 62, of Etters died at York Hospital on Sunday, November 4, 2012. He was born in Mechanicsburg, on Tuesday, March 28, 1950, son of the late Robert Forest Thorpe and Anna Mae (Walker) Thorpe. Donald was the husband of Bonita Bea (Messick) Thorpe whom he met at the age of fourteen and later married on April 6, 1968.
Donald received the Golden Helmet Award as one of the top ten running backs in Pennsylvania while attending Red Land High School . He was a standing Bishop with the Church of God, based in Cleveland, TN and a member of Church of God in York. Donald invented Triangle System of Training Equipment (T.A.S.T.E.), which became Freedom Weights. He was an avid Steelers fan.
Donald’s survivors include the love of his life and wife of 44 years, Bonita; four sons, James F. Thorpe of Fargo, ND, Donald C. Thorpe of Buckeye, AZ, Jeffrey A. Thorpe of San Francisco, CA, Joseph J. Thorpe and his wife Tiffany of Douglasville; five grandchildren; siblings, Barbara A. Martz and husband John of Dubois, James E. Thorpe of TN, Sharon E. Thorpe of Harrisburg; and several nieces and nephews. Among those preceding Donald in death is a brother Robert F. Thorpe, Jr.
All are welcome to join Donald’s family at his visitation on Friday, November 9, 2012, from 9:00 until time of service at 10:00 at Myers–Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory , 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, with Pastor Diapaye Toe officiating. Cremation was private and at the convenience of the family.
The family suggests memorial contributions in honor of his beloved Pomeranians, to SPCA of York County, 3159 Susquehanna Trail North, York, PA 17406.
