Donna Kay (Trace) Shughart

Donna Kay (Trace) Shughart, age 74, of Carlisle , and formerly of Mechanicsburg , died at the Church of God Home in Carlisle and surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, December 28, 2014.  Donna was born on Tuesday, March 26, 1940 in Mechanicsburg to the late Harry David Trace and Ruth Loretta (Unger) Trace.  Donna was the widow of Nevin “Ben” Chester Shughart whom she married on November 12, 1958, who died on September 23, 2010, and who took very good care of her for 52 years.  In addition to her parents and husband, Donna is preceded in death by her four brothers and  three sisters.

Donna’s survivors include her five loving children: Nevin E. Shughart and his wife, Lori, of Dillsburg, Elaine K. Sheaffer and her husband, Lynn, of Mechanicsburg, Beth Ann Bear of Carlisle, Cheryl L. Shughart of Mechanicsburg, Jeffrey W. Shughart and his wife, Betsy, of Shippensburg; her seven grandchildren: Adrienne Sheaffer, Melinda Bear, Julie Breach, Nathan Bear, Emma Shughart, Benjamin Shughart, Matthew Shughart; her three great-grandchildren:  Kayla Breach, Alexa Breach, Carter Breach; and several nieces and nephews.

Donna graduated from Mechanicsburg High School as part of the class of 1958.  Life was all about family to Donna and she cherished the time she spent with her husband, children and grandchildren.  The kids smile as they recall the hours spent with their mother, learning how to cook and crochet and to keep a warm and loving home.  Of course, none of them have been able to duplicate their mother’s filled meatloaf, which was amazing, and Donna’s grandchildren will always remember Grandma’s spaghetti.  Even Donna’s dogs knew that they would find a treat in her kitchen.  Hooch would walk to the freezer for ice cream and chocolate chip cookies, and from time to time her husband, Ben, could even have some.  Hermi, her beagle, would sit at the bottom of the stairs and offer an excited bellow as she waited for Donna to emerge.  Donna has left this physical world, but her love and gentle kindness lives on in her family forever.

All are welcome to join Donna’s family at her viewing on Friday, January 2, 2015, from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at 10:30 a.m. at Myers - Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory , 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Celebrant George Spangler officiating.  Burial will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Churchtown.  Honored to be pallbearers are: Nathan Bear, Nate Breach, Lynn Sheaffer, Ben Shughart, Jeffrey Shughart, Matthew Shughart, Nevin Shughart, and Bill Treichler.  Donna’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship immediately following the burial.
