Doreen Gloria (Murphy) Sheldon, 89, of Carlisle , and formerly of Mechanicsburg , died at Claremont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Monday, March 18, 2013. She was born in Philadelphia, on Tuesday, July 3, 1923, daughter of the late John Murphy and Agnes (Dorian) Murphy. Doreen was married to the late Charles “Chick” Edward Sheldon whom she married on October 11, 1941, and who died on May 8, 1998.
Doreen’s survivors include her loving children, Gary C. Sheldon of GA, William “Bill” Sheldon of NJ, Donna M. (Sheldon) Hair of Mechanicsburg; her six grandchildren, David Sheldon of Shermans Dale, Bryan Sheldon of Landisburg, Mark Sheldon of GA, Michael Sheldon of Quakertown, Amy Smith of Quakertown, Danielle Woods of MD; her 20 great grandchildren; her two great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Among those preceding Doreen in death are her brother, John “Jack” Murphy; her two sisters, Kay Willem, and Stella Vierick.
Doreen was a member of Saint Katharine Drexel Catholic Church in Mechanicsburg. She was 100% Irish and fiercely proud of her Irish heritage. Doreen was always honest and open and she was unwaveringly stubborn. She was a true people person, a real “Social Bee”. When Doreen’s husband retired she proclaimed that if he could retire she would as well and from that day forward they ate all their meals out. The afghans she made were unique and her family boasts a fine collection. Her love of animals, especially her birds and poodles, and of Little Debbie Cakes was legendary. Doreen will be truly missed.
All are welcome to join Doreen’s family at her visitation on Friday, March 22, 2013, from 1:00 until time of service at 2:00 at Myers–Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory , 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, with the Very Reverend William C. Forrey officiating. Burial will be private and in Longsdorf Cemetery in Mechanicsburg. Doreen’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at Hoss's Steak & Sea House , 61 Gettysburg Pike, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, following the service.
