Doris “Dot” Mae (Newhart) Metzgar, age 89, of Mechanicsburg, was embraced by her husband, Robert, in Heaven on Thursday, February 21, 2019. Dot was born on Monday, March 18, 1929 in Tannersville to the late George William Newhart and Sally Anna (Miller) Newhart. Dot was the widow of Robert “Bob” Leroy Metzgar, whom she married on May 29, 1953, and who died on November 21, 2014. In addition to her parents and husband, Dot is preceded in death by her sister, Jean Elizabeth Johnson.
Dot’s survivors include her brother, William “Bill” Newhart and his wife, Marlyn, of Mechanicsburg; her four nephews: Brett Newhart, Scott Newhart, Matt Johnson, Doug Johnson; and her three nieces: Allison Miner, Sally Holbert, Amy Bihl.
Dot graduated from Pocono High School in Tannersville. She retired from National Lab, after nearly 10 years of service working as an executive secretary. Dot was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Tannersville. She enjoyed spending time at the beach where she collected seashells to make various arts and crafts for her family and friends. Dot also loved traveling to the Caribbean with her husband, Bob. She was a gourmet cook and baker who liked making shopping trips anywhere she could get fresh ingredients for her dishes.
Dot’s family will be remembering her life privately. Interment in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville will be at the family’s convenience. Cremation was private.
