Dorothy Jean (Slothower) Badger

Loving Mother and Grandmother -

Dorothy Jean (Slothower) Badger, age 83, of Mechanicsburg, and formerly of Grantham, passed away with her family by her side on Wednesday, September 28, 2016.  Dorothy was born on Sunday, March 26, 1933 in Harrisburg to the late Howard J. Slothower and Margaret (Cobler) Slothower.  In addition to her parents, Dorothy is preceded in death by her brother, Howard Slothower, Jr.

Dorothy’s survivors include three children: Kathy Shanabrook and her husband, Alan, of Mechanicsburg, Kenneth Badger and his girlfriend, Tingmeiguo, of Mechanicsburg, Karen Sunday and her significant other, Dave Troxell, of West Fairview; her four grandchildren: Susan Sunday and her wife, Jana Hoglund, of Brooklyn, Lauren Sunday of San Diego, Kristin Shanabrook of Mechanicsburg, Kelsey Shanabrook of Mechanicsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy grew up on a dairy farm in Grantham.  She graduated from Messiah High School as part of the class of 1950 and attended Messiah College and Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC).  Dorothy retired from IBM in Mechanicsburg, after many years of service working as an office administrator.  She was also a volunteer usher at the Oyster Mill Theater in Camp Hill.  Dorothy was a member for over 35 years of Zion Lutheran Church in Harrisburg.  She was involved with the American Business Women’s Association and the Mechanicsburg Woman’s Club.  Dorothy was a huge Baltimore Orioles fan and she enjoyed watching them every chance she had.  She loved going to the Harrisburg Symphony, baking, and traveling.  Dorothy was good with computers and she liked using them.  She was part of a card club, where she loved playing pinochle.  She also liked to craft with pine cones and make greeting cards for her church.  Most importantly, Dorothy enjoyed her grandchildren.  She loved going to see them in plays and sporting events, she never missed any of them.

All are welcome to join Dorothy’s family at her gathering of family and friends on Sunday, October 9, 2016, from 2:00 p.m. until time of service at 3:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 15 South 4 th Street, Harrisburg, PA 17101; with Pastor Karin Pejack officiating.  Free validated parking is available in the Chestnut Street Garage.  Dorothy’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at her church immediately following the service.  To honor Dorothy’s commitment to health and education, her body has been donated to Pennsylvania Humanity Gifts Registry.
