Douglas Boelhouwer, age 82, of Dillsburg, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, February 24, 2019, following a long battle with cancer. Doug was born on Friday, August 28, 1936 in New Brunswick, NJ to the late Jacob Boelhouwer and Emma (Fodor) Boelhouwer. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Jacob Boelhouwer; and his sister, Christine Conover.
Doug will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 58 years, Virginia Ann (Williams) Boelhower; and his three daughters: Elizabeth “Liz” Werner and her husband, Robby, of Darien, CT, Katherine Queen of Charlotte, NC, Carolyn Kuljian and her husband, Mark, of Charlotte, NC. He will also be fondly remembered by his five grandchildren: Norman, Douglas, Franco, Ellen, and Jacob, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
A graduate of Woodbridge High School class of 1954, Doug went on to earn his Bachelor of Science from Rutgers University and his Master of Science from The University of Illinois. He devoted his career to education, beginning in the South Plainfield Public School District and later at Bloomsburg State University. While at Bloomsburg, he was part of the football and basketball coaching staff and led the football recruiting program in the late 60’s. For over 20 years, Doug worked at the Pennsylvania Department of Education in Harrisburg as Director of the Division of Nonpublic and Private School Services and as Health and Physical Education Advisor for the Bureau of Curriculum Services.
Doug was an active member of the Dillsburg community, serving on the Dillsburg Public Library Board and the Zoning Hearing Board. He was a member of Silver Spring Presbyterian Church in Mechanicsburg, where he had served as a trustee. Doug was a car enthusiast, a passionate college sports fan, and a loyal Rutgers Scarlet Knight. He was an avid bicyclist riding thousands of miles over the years.
All are welcome to join Doug’s family at his gathering of family and friends on Saturday, March 9, 2019, from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at 11:15 a.m. at Silver Spring Presbyterian Church, 444 Silver Spring Road, Mechanicsburg, PA 17050; with Reverend Donald B. Wahlig officiating. Doug’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at his church following the service. Inurnment in Elmwood Cemetery in North Brunswick, NJ will be at a later date and at the family’s convenience. Cremation was private.
The family sends their most heartfelt thanks to the many nurses and doctors of Fox Chase Cancer Center who gave him years of life and to those at Hospice of Central Pennsylvania who so lovingly cared for Doug in his final days.
