Edward “Ed” Francis Callahan

A Proud United States Army Veteran -

Edward “Ed” Francis Callahan, age 95, of Mechanicsburg, and formerly of New Castle, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 11, 2017.  Ed was born on Thursday, May 11, 1922 in New Castle to the late Edward Vincent Callahan and Margaret (Cosgrove) Callahan.  Ed was the widower of Jean J. (Jackson) Callahan, whom he married on August 1, 1985, and who died on April 3, 2017.  In addition to his parents and wife, Ed is preceded in death by his former spouse, Elizabeth “Betty” Hilbert; and his sister, Bette C. Acker.

Ed’s survivors include his two sons: Edward “Ed” Callahan and his wife, Corena, of Mechanicsburg, Richard “Rick” Callahan of Camp Hill and his former spouse, Juliane "Julie" Callahan, of Mechanicsburg; his two grandsons: Ryan P. Callahan of Camp Hill, Craig T. Callahan of Camp Hill; his sister, Delores Callahan of New Castle; and several nieces and nephews.

Ed graduated from New Castle High School as part of the class of 1940.  He proudly served in the United States Army during World War II and the Korean War.  Ed retired from American Brands, Inc., formerly The American Tobacco Company of New York City, after 30 years of service working as a district manager.  He was a lifelong member of the Catholic faith and attended mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mechanicsburg.  Ed was a member of numerous clubs including, but not limited to, VFW Memorial Post 6704, American Legion Post #109, the Mechanicsburg Club, West Shore Elks Lodge #2257, and the Carlisle Country Club.  He loved golfing, boating, and fishing during the winters that he spent in Florida with his wife, Jean.  Ed could also be found at the Mechanicsburg Club playing cards and mingling with his buddies.  He was a very social person who loved spending his time interacting with everyone he met.  Ed cherished the time he spent with his family and his late wife, especially at cookouts or going out to dinner and even more so if that meant he could eat a good helping of steak, his absolute favorite food.  He will be missed dearly by all those that knew him and in turn had the chance to play a good game of cards, share in a cookout, or experience his hugely interactive personality.

All are welcome to join Ed’s family at his gathering of family and friends on Thursday, July 20, 2017, from 12:30 p.m. until time of service at 1:00 p.m. at Myers - Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Reverend Augustine Joseph officiating. Interment will follow in Mechanicsburg Cemetery, where military honors will be presented by the Cumberland County Honor Guard.  Honored to be the urn bearer is Ryan Callahan.  Cremation was private.
