Edward Francis Powers Jr., 79, of Mechanicsburg , died at Holy Spirit Hospital on Monday, August 27, 2012. He was born in Philadelphia on October 4, 1932, son of the late Edward Francis Powers and Mary Agnes (Kilkenny) Powers.
Edward graduated from St. Johns of Manayunk High School in Philadelphia and attended Mount St. Mary’s University on a basketball scholarship. He retired from Eastern Adams Regional Police in 1998 as the Chief of Police. Edward was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mechanicsburg. He was a member Tri-County F.O. P. Lodge # 76. Edward was described by a fellow Irish-Catholic friend as follows: “He was such a joy to be around. He kept me on my toes with his inquisitive jokes and his astute political observations about all the crooks and phonies in the world. He periodically left me funny voice messages that had me cracking up all day thinking about them.” He also loved to travel, and above all, Edward especially enjoyed his grandchildren.
Edward’s survivors include his seven children, Ned Powers and his wife Kathy of SD, Daniel Powers and his wife Lory of York, Shawn Powers and his wife Lori of IA, Sharon Weaver and her husband Al of FL, Elecia Carbaugh and her husband Ric of SD, Brian Powers and his wife Lisa of FL, Tara Plessinger and her husband Matt of Mechanicsburg; 15 grandchildren, Casie, Neddie, Genevieve, Rebecca, Michael, Tom, Sarah, John, Blythe, Laura, Ian, Evan, Jared, Justin, Jillian; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
All are welcome to join Edward’s family at his Celebration of Life on Friday, October 5, 2012, from 3:00 to 4:00 at Myers–Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory , 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055. Graveside services will be held Saturday, October 6, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon, PA.
Cremation was private and at the convenience of the family.
