Edwin “Ed” Cloyd Hench

Gentle Giant -

Edwin “Ed” Cloyd Hench, age 75, of Camp Hill, passed away at VibraLife in Mechanicsburg on Monday, August 10, 2020.  Ed was born on Sunday, June 17, 1945, in Blain, Pennsylvania, to the late Donald Wade Hench and Ruby Jeanette (McMillen) Hench.  In addition to his parents, Ed is preceded in death by his son, Adam William Hench, and his three brothers:  Ronald Hench, Roger Hench, and Keith Hench.

Ed’s survivors include his wife of more than 55 years, Maureen Olive (Beam) Hench; his two daughters: Rebecca “Becky” J. Brown and husband Jon of Camp Hill, Sara E. Kling and husband Todd of Camp Hill; his daughter-in-law, Tammy J. Hench of Coal Township, Pennsylvania; his five grandchildren: Seth Hench, Laura Crowell, Hannah Hench, Jake Brown, Brandon Kling; his great-granddaughter: Autumn Crowell; his several nieces and nephews; and his beloved canine companion, Thunder.

Ed graduated from Cedar Cliff High School as part of the class of 1963.  He retired from L. B. Smith Ford in Lemoyne after many years of service working as a credit manager.  Ed was a member of New Cumberland First Church of God, where he helped to count the Sunday offerings.  An avid hunter and fisherman, Ed liked to tell the story of the time young Ed and his brother never jumped so fast as when a woman who caught them fishing on her property drew a gun and made them jump into the water.  He cherished time spent at the beaches of both Ocean City, New Jersey, and Maryland.  Ed was a big fan of westerns, NASCAR racing, and professional wrestling; and his favorite television programs were Chicago PD, Law & Order, and CSI.  Being a jokester, Ed always “got” his wife on April Fools’ Day.  Ed and Maureen enjoyed playing games and vacationing with Maureen’s sister and her husband.  At six foot three, Ed’s family affectionately deemed him their gentle giant.  He was an exceptional caregiver.  Ed drove his three girls, Maureen, Becky, and Sara everywhere; and more recently, he delighted in doting on his grandchildren. He was happiest when surrounded by his family, and he wanted them around every chance he got.  Ed’s family will dearly miss their gentle giant.

All are welcome to join Ed’s family at his public viewing on Friday, August 14, 2020, at 10:30 a.m. until time of service at 12:15 p.m. at Buhrig Funeral Home & Crematory, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Pastor Charlie Zahora officiating.  Family and friends are welcome to join Ed’s virtual gathering via video chat or telephone, starting at 11:30 a.m. until time of virtual viewing at 12:00 p.m., and time of service at 12:15 p.m.  Ed’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at Buhrig’s Gathering Place (next to the funeral home) immediately following the service.  A graveside service and burial will follow in Rolling Green Cemetery in Camp Hill.  Honored to be pall bearers are:  Todd Kling, Seth Hench, Jake Brown, Jon Brown, Brandon Kling, Larry Grose, and Tyler Crowell.

The family sends their most heartfelt thanks to Compassus Hospice and everyone at VibraLife who so lovingly cared for Ed during his illness.
