Edwin “Stan” Stanton Hammond, 74, of Mechanicsburg , died peacefully at Hershey Medical Center on Monday, September 16, 2013. He was born in Phillipsburg, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, November 22, 1938, son of the late Charles Mitchel Hammond and Altha Florence (Hallman) Hammond. Stan was the husband of Patricia Ann (Long) Hammond whom he married on August 22, 1961.
Stan’s survivors include his loving wife of 52 years, Patricia Ann (Long) Hammond; his son, Edwin “Ed” Charles Hammond of Mechanicsburg; his daughter, Ruth Ellen Hammond of Mechanicsburg; his two brothers, Charles “Mitch” M. Hammond, Jr. of New York, John D. Hammond of State College; his two sisters, Mary Hammond Anderson of Virginia, Sharon Bassett and her husband Brian of Petersburg; and several nieces and nephews.
Stan graduated as valedictorian from Lock Haven High School as part of the class of 1956 and from Penn State University . He retired in 2004 from the Naval Ships Parts Control Center in Mechanicsburg, as a systems analyst. He was a long-time member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Mechanicsburg, where he held the position of Lay Leader, sang base in the choir, functioned as the audio technician and served on numerous committees. Stan loved computers having grown up with their development. He wrote his own operating systems and greatly enjoyed converting sheet music into computer recordings. Stan was proud to have processed data for the SETI Institute , the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute .
All are welcome to join Stan’s family at his time of gathering on Saturday, October 5, 2013, from 11:00 until time of memorial service at 12:00 at Wesley United Methodist Church , 203 South Filbert Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, with Reverend Kevin E. Hughes and Reverend Dr. Brand W. Eaton officiating. Stan’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at his church immediately following the service. Burial will follow the reception in Mechanicsburg Cemetery . Honored to be the urn bearer is Edwin “Ed” Hammond. Cremation was private.
