Elizabeth “Betty” Ann (Clay) Byrd
Never Missed an Election -
Elizabeth “Betty” Ann (Clay) Byrd, age 92, of Harrisburg, and formerly of Steelton, passed away at UPMC Pinnacle Community Osteopathic Hospital on Friday, July 19, 2019. Betty was born on Saturday, May 7, 1927 in Harrisburg to the late Harry “Henry” Clay and Agnes Cecilia (Rapp) Clay. Betty lost her companion of over 50 years, Edward “Ed” George Hartman, who died on September 8, 2005. In addition to her parents and companion, Betty is preceded in death by her two sisters: Mary Wright and Patti Priar; and her two brothers: Jr. Clay and James Clay.
Betty’s survivors include her daughter, Carol Annette Heisey of Elizabethtown; her son, Charles “Chuck” Andrew Byrd, Jr. of Camp Hill; her granddaughter, Tracy Lynn Irwin and her husband, Dale, of Mt. Joy; her great-grandson, Derek Edward Irwin of Mt. Joy; and her brother, Phil Clay and his wife, Joann, of Harrisburg.
Betty retired from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, after many years of service working as a claims processor in the department of transportation. She was a member of the Catholic faith and exhibited that in her everyday life. She received an award for voting 60 straight years without missing an election.
All are welcome to join Betty’s family at her viewing on Thursday, July 25, 2019, from 11:00 a.m. until time of service at 12:00 p.m. at Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Reverend Samuel I. Dubois officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service in Mechanicsburg Cemetery. Honored to be pallbearers are: Dick Butina, Travis Butina, Charles Byrd, Tanner Dorward, Dale Irwin, Derek Irwin, Herm Slesser, and Clet Wright.
