Ellen E. (Shaffer) Adkins
Ellen Elizabeth (Shaffer) Adkins, age 102, of Camp Hill, passed away at the Cross Keys Village Brethren Home in New Oxford, on Friday, July 7, 2023. Ellen was born on September 6, 1920, in Windber to the Alonzo Shaffer and Ida Shaffer. Ellen was the widow of Wayne C. Adkins whom she married on June 23, 1946 and who died in February 2000. In addition to her parents and husband, Ellen is preceded in death by her son, Blake Adkins; five siblings; Alpha Weaver; Alonza Ray Shaffer; Samuel Boyd Shaffer; Doris Metzger; and Clair Shaffer.
Ellen’s survivors include her three sons: Terry Adkins and his wife, Mara, of Westminster, MD; James Adkins and his wife, Joanne, of Dillsburg; Craig Adkins and his wife, Mary, of Richmond, KY; her four grandchildren: Eric Adkins, Michael Adkins, Tyler Adkins, Emily Adkins; and her sister, Betty Miller.
Ellen graduated from Windber High School as part of the class of 1938. She was a lifelong member of the Church of the Brethren in Harrisburg, PA. Ellen was a hard worker all of her life. She worked at the Middletown Olmstead Air Force Base during World War II, repairing airplane engines for the war effort. Ellen met her husband Wayne during this time when he was mustered out of the service after serving in the Pacific campaign at Indiantown Gap. They met at a bowling alley in Middletown and enjoyed 54 years of marriage together until Wayne’s death. Ellen was a wonderful mother and devoted to her family who always included her brothers and sisters at family gatherings. She was an excellent cook and also enjoyed gardening, traveling, knitting, crocheting, and hosting family gatherings. Ellen’s family and friends would often describe her as kind and loving. Everyone who was privileged to know her will always remember her as the rock. Her faith was very strong and her example of devotion to God reflected in her family.
All are welcome to join Ellen’s family at her viewing on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, from 11:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:45 a.m. at Buhrig Funeral Home & Crematory, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; and her virtual gathering of family and friends and service via video chat or telephone beginning at 11:30 a.m. with Pastor Linda Titzell officiating. Ellen’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at Buhrig’s Gathering Place (next to the funeral home) immediately following the service. Burial will follow the St. John’s Cemetery at 4605 East Trindle Road, Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.
The family sends their most heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Cross Keys Village, The Brethren Home in New Oxford, PA. We are grateful to everyone who so lovingly cared for Ellen. She loved you all.
