Elverta Jane (Hostetter) Horst
Always Had a Twinkle in Her Eye -
Elverta Jane (Hostetter) Horst, age 87, of Harrisonburg, VA, and formerly of York, PA, passed peacefully into Heaven on Tuesday, March 14, 2017, while surrounded by her family at her home. Elverta was born on Saturday, January 4, 1930 in Gap, PA to the late Galen B. Hostetter and Susie K. (Hershey) Hostetter. In addition to her parents, Elverta is preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Leona Horst; a brother-in-law, Amos; an infant sister, Mary Hostetter; a sister, Virginia Neff and her husband, Leon; and her in-laws: Verna Delinger and her husband, Roy, and Lydia Denlinger and her husband, Martin.
Elverta’s survivors include her loving husband of 67 years, Lloyd Rutt Horst; her 8 children: Mervin and Lois Horst, Darrel and Teena Horst, Gerry Horst, Sue and Arlen Kanagy, Laverne and Joan Horst, Judy and Michael Peterson, Mary and Paul Leaman, Steve and Brenda Horst; her 26 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; her 3 sisters: Eleanor Hershey, Sarah and Richard Buckwalter, Emma and Park Ranck; her brother, Hershey and Evelyn Hostetter; and countless others.
Elverta married Lloyd R. Horst on January 4, 1950 and the two enjoyed 67 years together. They set up their homestead in York, PA, where they raised their eight children along with chickens and a large garden. She faithfully served beside her husband in church ministry for 38 years. She was a homemaker and a woman of great hospitality. Her home had an open-door policy where guests were sure to enjoy homegrown vegetables and homemade bread at her large table. She had a servant’s heart, a twinkle in her eye, and a wonderful sense of humor. She will be greatly missed by her whole family and all of her friends.
All are welcome to join Elverta’s family at her memorial service on Saturday, March 18, 2017, at 3:00 p.m. at Slate Hill Mennonite Church, 1357 Slate Hill Road, Camp Hill, PA 17011.
In lieu of flowers, condolence gifts can be made in Elverta’s name to the Eastern Mennonite School, 801 Parkwood Drive, Harrisburg, VA, 22802 for the “Let the Children Come” project.
