Esther Marie (Sherley) Winger, age 81, of Harrisburg , died peacefully at Harrisburg Hospital and surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, November 29, 2014. Esther was born on Tuesday, October 17, 1933 in Harrisburg. She was the widow of Robert “Bob” William Winger, who died in 1984. In addition to her parents and husband, Esther is preceded in death by her son, Gerald E. Yocum, her granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn Rowe, and her siblings: Syvalia Arnett, Betty Still, Gladys Espenshade, Paul Sherley and John Sherley.
Esthers’s survivors include her two daughters: Doris Jean Ward of Harrisburg, Shirley “Cookie” Louise Haas of Mifflinburg; her daughter-in-law, Janice Yocum of Dillsburg; her grandchildren: Sherrie Yocum, Shelly Greenfield, Sheryl Yocum, Crystal Rowe-Todd, Jillian Stoner, Abigail Conroy, Danial Swartzlander, Jeff Swartzlander, Jerry Swartzlander, Jr.; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Esther graduated from Pottsville School of Nursing with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and she received a master’s degree in teaching from Temple University . She worked at Harrisburg Hospital and Altoona Hospital , and for some time she was the Director of the School of Anesthesia. Esther loved Jeff Gordon, the Miami Dolphins, Bill O’Reilly on FOX News, and McDonald’s cheeseburgers. Her family remembers Esther always wearing a sweater to be comfortable.
Services will be private on Friday, December 5, 2014, with burial will follow in Rolling Green Memorial Park in Camp Hill. Esther’s family has entrusted her care to Myers – Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory in Mechanicsburg, (717) 766-3421.
