Ethel Mae (Stambaugh) Matthews
Devoted Wife and Mother -
Ethel Mae (Stambaugh) Matthews, age 90, of Mechanicsburg, passed away peacefully at West Shore Hospital on Thursday, March 16, 2017. Ethel was born on Wednesday, November 3, 1926, in Dillsburg to the late Russell Baker Stambaugh and Mabel Gretna (Gochenour) Stambaugh. In addition to her parents, Ethel is preceded in death by her siblings: Russell Stambaugh, Jr. and Florence Addison.
Ethel’s survivors include her loving husband of 61 years, Donald “Don” Marquis Matthews; her daughter; Faith Matthews of Mechanicsburg; her sister, Marian Stambaugh; her two nephews: Jeffrey Addison and his wife, Lynn, and their daughter, Candace, and Randall Addison and his wife, Leslie, and their children: Jeffrey and Stephanie, all of Buffalo, NY.
Ethel graduated from William Penn Senior High School in York as part of the class of 1944 and from ICC Business School in Scranton. She was formerly a member of both Grace United Methodist Church of Mechanicsburg and Harrisburg, and most recently a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Lemoyne. Ethel was a devoted wife and mother who enjoyed entertaining at home. Although her favorite holiday was Easter, she was known for baking over 20 varieties of Christmas cookies every year. She also liked to make crafts and put together jigsaw puzzles. Ethel had a fondness for hats. A few of her favorite activities included taking pictures and bird watching. She loved her pet cats. Ethel liked to travel to Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, NY, and to cruise, especially on the Panama Canal. She enjoyed the time spent with her family at their second home in Renovo, PA, and eating at the Sunlight Diner in Mechanicsburg where she and her husband became friends with many of the staff. Ethel’s family and friends will miss her dearly.
All are welcome to join Ethel’s family at her viewing on Monday, March 20, 2017, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Myers – Buhrig Funeral Home & Crematory, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; and at her viewing on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary United Methodist Church, 700 Market Street, Lemoyne, PA 17043; with Lewis Parks and Anthony Alexander officiating. Burial will immediately follow in Rolling Green Cemetery in Camp Hill. Ethel’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at her church following the burial. Honored to be pallbearers are: Jeffrey Addison, Randall Addison, Duane Myers, John Neimer, Yasser Mohamed, and William Klaiber.
