Fred Moore Orner, Jr., 72, of Mechanicsburg , and formerly of Shiremanstown and New Cumberland , died at ManorCare Health Services in Camp Hill on Saturday, October 13, 2012. He was born in Harrisburg, on Wednesday, July 3, 1940, son of the late Fred Moore Orner, Sr. and Minnie Elizabeth (Saul) Orner. Fred was the husband of Bonnie Lee (Sheaffer) Orner whom he married on June 23, 1990.
Fred graduated from New Cumberland High School as part of the class of 1958. He was a proud Air Force veteran. Fred retired from Gannett Fleming in 2002, after many proud years of service working as a draftsman and inspector. He dearly loved baseball and was an enormously devoted Yankees fan. Fred’s all-time favorite player was Mickey Mantle, and he was often heard saying “When I go to see Mickey Mantle….” He enjoyed casinos, fishing for trout with his sons and spending time with his dogs. Fred looked forward to breakfast each morning with his dear friend, Shirley, at the Sunlight Diner in Mechanicsburg.
Fred’s survivors include his loving wife of 22 years, Bonnie Lee Orner; four sons, Stephen Orner and his wife Sharon of VA, Donald Orner and his wife Ann of Mechanicsburg, James Orner and his wife Patti of Dillsburg, Thomas Orner of Gardners; three daughters, Carol Shenk and her husband Dennis of Lancaster, Karen Crawford and her husband Erik of Dillsburg, Sharon Filipovich and her husband Brad of Carlisle; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald Orner and his wife Carol of Gordonville; a sister, Cynthia “Cyd” Rospendowski and her husband Walter of Mechanicsburg; his special friend, Shirley Dean of Camp Hill; and his dog, “Sadie Girl”.
All are welcome to join Fred’s family at his gathering of family and friends on Saturday, October 20, 2012, from 1:00 until time of memorial service at 2:30 at Myers–Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory , 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, with Pastor Ken Landis officiating. A committal service will immediately follow, where military honors will be presented by the Cumberland County Honor Guard . Cremation was private.
