Freda Mae (Eckert) Becker

Quite the Straight Shooter -

Freda Mae (Eckert) Becker, age 87, of Ocean Grove, NJ, and formerly of Chicago Heights, IL and Red Bank, NJ, passed away on Tuesday, August 21, 2018.  Freda was born on Wednesday, July 15, 1931 in Mechanicsburg to the late Thomas Christian Eckert and Edna Clare (Linn) Eckert.  Freda was the widow of Harvey Lee Becker, whom she married on January 25, 1952, and who died on December 15, 1987.  In addition to her parents and husband, Freda is preceded in death by her two sisters.

Freda’s survivors include her five children: Jeffrey “Jeff” Becker and his wife, Cheryl, of Ipswich, MA, David “Dave” Becker and his wife, Dawn, of Chicago, IL, Abbie Stokes of Middletown, NJ, Julie Cole and her husband, Ed, of Gloversville, NY, Stephen “Steve” Becker and his wife, Kelly, of Middletown, NJ; her eleven grandchildren: Cary, Alyssa, Jennifer, Robin, Liz, Amy, Travis, Bridget, Gretchen, Lily, Kyle; her nine great-grandchildren; her sister; and several nieces and nephews.

Freda graduated from Mechanicsburg High School as part of the class of 1949.  She worked as a shoe model for Pomeroy’s Department Store where she met her husband who happened to be shoe shopping when she caught his eye.  The two moved to New York and then to Chicago.  They lived there from 1958 until 1969 and absolutely loved it.  From Illinois, the Becker family went to and settled in New Jersey.  Freda loved the beach and the ocean; she would often take walks on the boardwalk.  Freda was an independent woman who enjoyed being at home the most where she raised five wonderful children.  Later in life, she managed an apartment complex in Long Branch, NJ and was able to keep herself busy.  Freda was quite the straight shooter who spoke the truth as well as remaining honestly opinionated.  She treasured her grandchildren the most and truly valued the time they spent together.

All are welcome to join Freda’s family at her gathering of family and friends on Monday, August 27, 2018, from 11:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:45 a.m. at Trindle Spring Lutheran Church, 14 State Road, Mechanicsburg, PA 17050; with Pastor Aaron Erdley officiating.  Burial will follow in Trindle Spring Cemetery in Mechanicsburg.  Freda’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at Snapper’s Bar & Grill, 120 East Allen Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, following the burial.
