Garlin Henry Lewis

Fishing in Canada -

Garlin Henry Lewis, 86, of Mechanicsburg , died suddenly at home on Friday, November 1, 2013.  He was born in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, on Friday, March 4, 1927, son of the late John Franklin Lewis and Viola Mae (Airgood) Lewis.  Garlin was the husband of Maria Luise (Feldmeth) Lewis whom he married on December 12, 1965.

Garlin’s survivors include his loving wife of almost 48 years, Maria Luise (Feldmeth) Lewis; his five children, Becca Dressler of Dover, James Lewis of Brookville, Pamela Barham of Virginia, Michelle Skurzynski of Carlisle, and Donna Weatherman of Mechanicsburg; his sister, Donna Mae Wells of Ohio; his 14 grandchildren, including the grandson who lived with him for many years and who thought of him as his father, Justin Lewis; his five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.  Among those preceding Garlin in death are his daughter, Sharon Moyer, and his six brothers and two sisters.

Garlin retired in 1966 as a Chief Warrant Officer from the United States Army after more than 22 years of service and having served in the Korean War .  Always loving to work, Garlin continued working after his retirement from the Army.  He was an auto body mechanic for Rufe Chevrolet in Carlisle, the owner/operator of the former Arco Service Station on High Street in Carlisle, he worked security on the New Cumberland Army Depot , and as an auto mechanic for LB Smith Ford in Lemoyne.  Garlin loved the time he spent fishing in Canada so much that for more than 20 years he spent the entire season, from April until September, on the lake.  He could fix almost anything and his family will always remember with fondness his collection of nuts, bolts, and nails which always found their way into his pockets.

All are welcome to join Garlin’s family at his Gathering of Family and Friends on Thursday, November 7, 2013, from 11:00 a.m. until time of Farewell Service at 12:30 p.m. at Myers–Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory , 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.  Burial will follow in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, Pennsylvania, where military honors will be presented.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Support Homeless Veterans, Inc. , 1900 Fitzgerald Street, Philadelphia, PA 19145.  Garlin’s family has entrusted his care to Myers–Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory in Mechanicsburg, (717) 766-3421.  Read Garlin’s full obituary, view his memorial video and portrait and sign his official guest book at www.Myers-Buhrig.com .
