George was an exceptionally caring, supportive, and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Nothing was more important to him than family. He also enjoyed playing golf, and rooting for Pittsburgh sports teams. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mechanicsburg.

After graduating from Duquesne University and serving in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, George devoted his career to public service and environmental protection. From his first position in the Allegheny County Health Department, he joined the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection for 12 years. He then moved to the U.S. Department of Interior, Office of Surface Mining, where he served for 28 years, while earning a Masters of Governmental Administration at the University of Pennsylvania.
