George Alfred Uhler, Jr.
Had a Big Heart -
George Alfred Uhler, Jr., age 85, of Mechanicsburg, passed away peacefully on the morning of Wednesday, December 4, 2019. George was born on Saturday, August 4, 1934 in Renovo to the late George Alfred Uhler, Sr. and Alice Rose (Brown) Uhler. In addition to his parents, George is preceded in death by his sister, A. “Ginny” Virginia Bemiller.
George’s survivors include his three children: Rodney “Rod” G. Uhler and his wife, Mitsuko, of East Lansing, MI, Darryl G. Uhler and his wife, Jeannine, of York, PA, Kerry Lynne Dicken and her husband, Nathan, of Christiansburg, VA; his seven grandchildren: Aisa M. Uhler, Brandon C. Baxter, Joshua T. Dicken, Sean M. Baxter, Eva B. Dicken, Hans L. Uhler, Axel C. Uhler; his former spouse, Linda M. Uhler of Lansing, MI; and several nieces and nephews.
George graduated from the Philadelphia School for the Deaf (PSD) as valedictorian as part of the class of 1952. He retired from Fry Communications, Inc. in Mechanicsburg, after a few years of service working in printing. George was an ordained Mennonite minister and served with the First Deaf Mennonite Church in Lancaster. He taught American Sign Language (ASL) with the Capital Area Intermediate Unit (CAIU), led the local deaf socials, and held a private pilot’s license. George enjoyed attending operas and traveling, he even went to Japan several times to visit his son, Rod. He also was a talented chess player and used to show dogs, which mainly included boxers. George will be remembered most for his big heart and loving spirit.
All are welcome to join George’s family at his gathering of family and friends on Tuesday, December 10, 2019, from 11:00 a.m. until time of service at 12:00 p.m. at Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Reverend George A. Spangler officiating. Interment will follow in Rolling Green Cemetery in Camp Hill. Honored to be urn bearers are: Rodney Uhler and Darryl Uhler. George’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at Boomerang Bar and Grill, 110 Limekiln Road, New Cumberland, PA 17070, following the interment. Cremation was private.
