Gilda Grace (DeIuliis) Aluise, 96, of Mechanicsburg and formerly of Altoona died at home and with her family by her side on Sunday, May 20, 2012. She was born in Altoona on Wednesday, March 8, 1916, daughter of the late Pietro DeIuliis and Elizabeth (Manieri) DeIuliis. Gilda was the widow of Angelo Albert Aluise who she married on January 1, 1939.
Gilda was a resident of Wesley Mews in Mechanicsburg from 1999 to 2011. She was a member of Church of the Good Shepherd in Camp Hill since 1968. Gilda loved to cook and used her passion her entire life. She and her late husband owned and operated The Altoona Hotel in Altoona from the 1940s until 1968. Gilda served as the chef and was well known for her homemade pizza and Christmas cookies. She enjoyed her crafts and everyone who came to visit left with a “treat” which was most often food or a craft. “Her family was everything to her.”
Gilda’s survivors include her loving daughter: Joanna Elizabeth Shields and her husband William of Mechanicsburg; her grandson: Douglas Shields and his wife Ann of Mechanicsburg; her two granddaughters: Ann Shields-Young and her husband Donald of Carlisle, Carolyn Plummer and her husband Patrick of Mechanicsburg; her six great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Among those preceding Gilda in death is her daughter: Bernadine Angela Aluise; five brothers; and one sister.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, May 24, 2012, at 10:30 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church , 806 11th Street, Altoona, PA, 16602, (814) 942-8501. Burial will immediately follow in Calvary Cemetery in Altoona. All are welcome to join Gilda’s family at her Memorial Mass on Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at 10:30 at Church of the Good Shepherd , 3435 East Trindle Road, Camp Hill, PA, 17011, with Reverend Paul C. Helwig celebrating. Gilda’s family invites everyone to gather with them for a time of food and fellowship at her church immediately following the Mass.
