Glen Rankin Nailor
104 Years of Life -
Glen Rankin Nailor, 104, of Carlisle and formerly of Mechanicsburg died on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at Claremont Nursing & Rehabilitation Center where he lived since July of 1997. He was born in a farmhouse in Lisburn on Friday, November 8, 1907 son of the late Jacob Sunday and Caroline Eve (Crist) Nailor. Glen was the youngest of seven children and he never married.
In his younger years, Glen helped his father and brothers in the farm fields in South Eastern Cumberland County. Later he worked on local roads under a WPA Project during and after the depression. Glen and his brother, Earl, worked on the first section of the PA Turnpike from Carlisle to Newburg from 1936 to 1940. They worked in the Blue Mountain Tunnel and the Kittatinny Tunnel blasting and carrying out debris. The PA Turnpike was opened from Carlisle, through the two tunnels, to Route 30 in October 1940.
Glen was an accomplished builder, carpenter and an excellent concrete finisher. He worked for Grubb Construction building houses in the Camp Hill and Harrisburg areas. Glen later worked for Mr. Harold Gale for 16 years, building 615 homes.
Glen was an avid hunter and he helped to build a hunting cabin near Renova in Clinton County which they called "Brothers of the Brush." Glen was a member in good standing of the Mechanicsburg Club since August 13, 1940. He was the superintendent of the Club’s picnic grounds for several decades and as long as his health permitted.
Glen is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Among those preceding Glen in death are his five brothers: Leroy, Paul, Jacob, Carroll, Earl; and one sister: Helen (Nailor) Gibble.
All are welcome to join Glen’s family at his Gathering of Family and Friends on Wednesday, March 14, 2012, from 10:15 until time of Graveside Service and burial at 10:30 at Longsdorf Cemetery , Locust Point Road, Mechanicsburg, with Kenneth Lehman, Glen’s great nephew, officiating. Glen’s family invites everyone to join them for a Time of Food and Fellowship at New Kingstown Fire Hall following the burial.
