Grace Elizabeth (Souder) Stought

A Proud Farm Woman -

Grace Elizabeth (Souder) Stought, 97, of Mechanicsburg and Carlisle died Thursday, August 18, 2011 at the Thornwald Home while in the presence of her loving family. She was born on Friday, March 6, 1914 in Grantham the daughter of the late Melvin C. and Evelyn M. (Mann) Souder. Grace was the widow of John G. Stought who she married on September 17, 1938 and who died after only 24 short years of marriage.

Grace graduated from Messiah High School in Grantham as part of the class of 1932. Grace was member of Trindle Spring Lutheran Church in Mechanicsburg where she began attending in 1964. She was a former member of both Boiling Springs and Shepherdstown Evangelical United Brethren Church.

Grace was a proud farm wife until the death of her husband in 1963. She retired from Wayne Noss Flowers in Boiling Springs and she worked at The Camera Box in Mechanicsburg and Paul’s Dutch Cupboard Restaurant in New Kingstown. She was a long-time and active member of the Society of Farm Women, Group #11, until the group dissolved.

Grace loved to play cards, especially Pinochle. She took great joy in her Birthday Parties and loved it when the family gathered together for special occasions. Her family remembers Grace taking her grandchildren to Children’s Lake in Boiling Springs to feed the ducks and then to the Boiling Springs Tavern for lunch which was a “special treat”.

Grace is survived by her two loving sons: Kenneth E. Stought and his wife, Udora, of Carlisle and their children: Todd of Newville and his daughter, Shelby; Sheri Burke and her husband, Thomas, of Carlisle and their children Samantha, Emily and Bentli; and Troy of Newville. Also Robert C. Stought and his wife, Deborah of Carlisle and their children: John and his wife, Jessica of Newburg and their children Brady and Jackson, and Jodie Bowermaster and her husband, Timothy of Carlisle and their children Zoe and Piper. She is also survived by two brothers, Ralph L. and his wife Patricia Souder and Frederick L. Souder and his wife, Yvonne, both of Carlisle. She was preceded in death by one brother: Ray M. Souder and one sister: Ruth E. Klinedinst.

All are welcome to join Grace’s family at her viewing on Tuesday, 8/23/2011, from 12:30 until time of Funeral Service at 2:00 at Myers–Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory , 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA, 17055, (717) 766-3421, www.Myers-Buhrig.com . Pastor Richard G. Lorenz will officiate and burial will immediately follow in Grantham Memorial Park.
