Griggs “Cookie” Filmore Cooke, age 93, of Gardners, died on Friday, March 1, 2024. Griggs was born on Saturday, August 16, 1930, in Sharpsburg, MD to the late Lester Riland Cooke and Mildred Irene (Churchey) Fry. Cookie was the widower of Shirley Jane (Mayes) Cooke, whom he married on July 10, 1948, and who died on March 20, 2013. In addition to his parents and wife, Cookie is preceded in death by his son, Richard L. Cooke; and his great great-granddaughter, Kylie Jo Parson.
Cookie’s survivors include his three children: Vicki Arndt and her partner, Judy Faulders, of Hagerstown, MD, Charles “Chuck” Cooke and his wife, Barbara, of Merrillville, IN, Roxanne Lamar of Mechanicsburg; his seven grandchildren: Michelle Appleby, Jeffrey Cooke, Jenelle Hunsicker, Shawn Cooke, Staci Snyder, Matthew Cooke, Shari Kilpatrick; his 17 great-grandchildren; his ten great great-grandchildren; and his companion, Lorene Bennett.
He was a member of Mechanicsburg First Church of God. Griggs was a life-long railroader; having served forty-four years on the Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central, Amtrak and Conrail from which he retired. He served as Local Chairman for UTU 816. "Cookie" was an avid hunter and a member of Deer Haven Hunting Camp in Hillsgrove, PA for 50 years. Dad never met a stranger. He left his mark on this earth in so many ways and will be dearly missed by so many.
All are welcome to join Cookie’s family at his gathering of family and friends on Saturday, July 6, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. with a service beginning at 2:00 p.m. all at Mechanicsburg 1st Church of God, 28 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Pastor Charlie Hostettler officiating. Cookie’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at Buhrig’s Gathering Place immediately following the service. Interment will take place on Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in Chestnut Hill Cemetery in Mechanicsburg.
