Generous Beyond Words -
Helen Lucille (Garrison) Schardin, 85, of Mechanicsburg , died peacefully at the Church of God Home in Carlisle on Thursday, May 23, 2013. She was born in Marion, IN, on Monday, July 25, 1927, daughter of the late Clarence Franklin Garrison and Lenora (McComb) Garrison. Helen was the widow of Roy Kennard Schardin whom she married on September 2, 1945 and who died on May 26, 2005.
Helen’s survivors include her four loving children, Stephen Schardin and his wife Kathy of Andover, MA, Barbara Schardin Dawson and her husband Clay of Mechanicsburg, PA, Patrick Schardin and his wife Martha of Altamonte Springs, FL, Susie De Soto and her husband Oscar of Vienna, VA; her ten grandchildren; and her five great-grandchildren. Among those preceding Helen in death are her three brothers, Bill Haynes, Jim Garrison, Clarence “Jug” Garrison; and her sister, Mary Haynes Marler.
Helen grew up in and graduated from the Masonic Home in Franklin, IN, in the 1940s. She loved being a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Shiremanstown. Helen was generous beyond words, having given the majority of her income to numerous charities during her life. She was a true giver of both her money and her love and kindness. Her kind spirit drew her to every baby she saw and she enjoyed each of them but none more than her own children, grand children and great-grandchildren. Helen enjoyed camping, traveling, gardening, exercising, and most especially crossword puzzles. She was happiest surrounded by family.
All are welcome to join Helen’s family at her Gathering of Family and Friends on Saturday, June 1, 2013, from 10:30 until time of Memorial Service at 11:00 at St. John's Lutheran Church , 44 West Main Street, Shiremanstown, PA 17011, with Pastor Michael L. Seifried and Pastor Sarah M. Keilholtz officiating. Helen’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at her church immediately following the Memorial Service. Interment in Arlington National Cemetery will follow at a later date. Cremation was private.
The family suggests memorial contributions to St. John's Lutheran Church , 44 West Main Street, Shiremanstown, PA 17011, or the Church of God Home, 801 North Hanover Street, Carlisle, PA 17013. The family sends their most heartfelt thanks to everyone at the Church of God Home in Carlisle who so lovingly cared for Helen during her illness.
