Helga Margit (Penczkowski) Shanafelter, 75, of Mechanicsburg , and formerly of Blain, PA, and Zephyrhills, FL , died peacefully at home on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013. She was born in Lodz, Poland, on Wednesday, March 16, 1938, daughter of the late Artur Penczkowski and Marta (Matz) Handke. Helga was the widow of Guy Neil Shanafelter whom she married on November 16, 1958 and who died on September 8, 2003.
Helga’s survivors include her two sons, Roy Shanafelter and his wife Karen of Lewisberry, Rodger Shanafelter of Mechanicsburg; and her two grandchildren, Jake Shanafelter and Allie Shanafelter both of Lewisberry.
Helga was a proud naturalized American citizen who loved her family a great deal. She enjoyed many activities during her life, especially playing bridge, all kinds of traveling, gardening, crafts and sewing. Helga spent a lot of time in Florida and she loved spending time there with her family and friends.
All are welcome to join Helga’s family at her visitation on Thursday, April 4, 2013, from 2:00 until time of service at 3:00 at Myers–Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory , 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, with Pastor John Kipp and Chaplain Rick Martin officiating. Helga’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at her home following the service on Thursday. Burial will be on Friday, April 5, 2013, at 10:00, with a 9:50 arrival, in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville.
