Herbert Theodore Getz, Jr., 89, of Camp Hill , and formerly of Mechanicsburg , died at Golden Living Center-West Shore on Saturday, January 26, 2013. He was born in Mechanicsburg, on Saturday, October 20, 1923, son of the late Herbert Theodore Getz, Sr. and Ruth Viola (Arnold) Getz. Herbert was the widower of Ruth Irene (Hitz) Getz to whom he was married for 44 years and who died on September 29, 1993.
Herbert graduated from Mechanicsburg High School as part of the class of 1942, where he was an all conference football player. He retired from D & H Distributors in Harrisburg, after 35 years of service working as a warehouse supervisor. Herbert was a member of Christian Life Assembly in Mechanicsburg. He was a US Navy WW II Veteran; a member of the Mechanicsburg VFW Post # 6704, and the Mechanicsburg American Legion Post # 109. Herbert enjoyed watching football especially Penn State, Sunday drives with his wife, and taking the grandchildren fishing. He never missed watching Lawrence Welk on television and loved playing the piano in his younger years.
Herbert’s survivors include loving children, Sandy Fishel and her husband Don of Mechanicsburg, Wanda Myers and her husband Bill of Camp Hill, Brenda Jones and her husband Ron of East Berlin, Herbert T. Getz III of Mechanicsburg; grandchildren, Shawn Simpson, Mike Helman, Heidi Helman-Suhr, Travis Simpson, Lissa Allen, and Herbert T. (Teddy) Getz IV; and several nieces and nephews. Among those, preceding Herbert in death is a son, Duane Alan Getz.
All are welcome to join Herbert’s family at his viewing on Thursday, January 31, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 and on Friday, February 1, 2013, from 9:30 until time of service at 10:30 at Myers–Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory , 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, with Pastor Ron Smith officiating.
Burial will follow in Mechanicsburg Cemetery , where the Cumberland County Honor Guard will present military honors.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Mechanicsburg Wildcat Foundation , 500 South Broad Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.
