Herbert “Herb” John Vieweger
A Devoted Family Man -
Herbert John Vieweger, age 100, of Mechanicsburg, and formerly of New Hyde Park, NY, passed away on Thursday, April 25, 2019. Herb was born on Sunday, October 20, 1918 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Herman Vieweger and Anna (Geyer) Vieweger. Herb was the widower of Joan (McAfee) Vieweger, whom he married on August 14, 1948, and who died on April 12, 1980 and of Margaret “Peg” (Militello Bossert) Vieweger, whom he married on May 3, 1991, and who died on June 26, 2010. In addition to his parents and wives, Herb is preceded in death by his son, Herbert Frederick Vieweger.
Herb’s survivors include his daughter, Eileen Marie McNulty of Mechanicsburg; his two step daughters: Marilyn Kratzer and her husband, Joe, of Ronkonhoma, NY, Debbie LaCorte and her husband, Ross, of Levittown, NY; his six grandchildren: David, Ryan, Kimberly, Joseph, Dana Marie, Danielle; and his six great-grandchildren: Matthew, Jaxson, Brandon, Autumn, Haylie and Justin.
Herb graduated from Boys’ High School in Brooklyn as part of the class of 1936. He proudly served his country in the Army Air Corp during World War II, where he flew many missions as a B-24 navigator over Italy and North Africa. Herb retired from the New York Telephone Company in 1986, after more than 35 years of service working in the Test Bureau. Herb was very knowledgeable on just about any subject. He loved to drive and knew nearly everything about cars. Herb could do almost anything; whether it was baking a pie, making his famous homemade gravy or building a house. His family fondly remembers his generous spirit and will greatly miss his love and devotion.
All are welcome to gather with Herb’s family on Thursday, May 2, 2019, from 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the cemetery office in Pinelawn Memorial Park, 2030 Wellwood Avenue, Farmingdale, NY 11735. Guests are asked to assemble at the cemetery office, where a procession will depart at 1:45 p.m. for Herb’s grave, where a committal ceremony with military honors will be held. Herb’s family invites everyone to join them for a dutch treat reception at The Milleridge Inn, 585 North Broadway, Jericho, NY 11753 immediately following the burial.
