Hilma Lorraine (Sterbinsky) Kovlak
Legendary Crumb Cake -
Hilma Lorraine (Sterbinsky) Kovlak, 82, of Mechanicsburg and formerly of Stratford, CT died Thursday, October 13, 2011 at Holy Spirit Hospital. She was born on Saturday, February 2, 1929 in Bridgeport, CT the daughter of the late Frank A. and Alice Rosamond (Begelspiker) Sterbinsky. Hilma was the widow of Vincent Martin Kovlak Sr who died on August 31, 2006 and who she married on September 13, 1951.
Hilma graduated from Central High School as part of the class of 1946 and from Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing in 1949. She was a registered nurse before she became a proud mother and homemaker. Hilma was the bookkeeper for Vinny’s Garage in Stratford, CT which was her husband’s garage. She was active in her church, serving as a Sunday and Vacation Bible School Teacher. Hilma enjoyed her years as a den mother and loved bowling, knitting and crocheting. She made a legendary crumb cake and will always be remembered by her family as “Buddy” and “Grandbud”. Hilma will always be loved and missed.
Hilma’s survivors include her two loving sons: Vincent Kovlak Jr and his wife Cynthia of Bellmawr, NJ; Daniel Kovlak and his wife Tereza of Gaithersburg, MD; one grandson; nine granddaughters; 11 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Among those preceding Hilma in death are: her parents, her husband of 54 years, her brother Frank Sterbin and her sister Ethel Bogardus.
All are welcome to join Hilma’s family at her Graveside Service and Burial on Monday, October 17, 2011 at 12:00 at Park Cemetery , 620 Lindley Street, Bridgeport, CT, 06606, with her son, Pastor Vincent Kovlak Jr., officiating.
