H. Marie (Varner) Smith, age 84, of Mechanicsburg, passed away on Sunday, March 19, 2023.  Marie was born on Friday, May 6, 1938, in Carlisle to the late Edward Charles Varner and Ruth Ester (Mixell) Varner.  In addition to her parents, Marie is preceded in death by her two brothers, William Charles Varner and John Edward Varner.

Marie’s survivors include her husband of 66 years, John H. Smith; her four children: Michael W. Smith and his wife, Tammy, of Mechanicsburg; Vickie L. Smith of Mechanicsburg; Scott A. Smith and his wife, Chris, of Shermans Dale; Kimberly “Kim” D. Johnston of Mechanicsburg; her five grandchildren; her 11 great-grandchildren; her two sisters: Elizabeth A. Penterman and Beverly J. Chapman, both of Phoenix, AZ; several nieces and nephews; and her beloved feline companion, Missy.

Marie was a graduate of Carlisle High School.  She enjoyed traveling and especially liked to go visit family in Arizona.  In 1959, Marie and John settled in Mechanicsburg to raise their family.  She was a long-time member of Silver Spring Presbyterian Church in Mechanicsburg, where she served as deacon and was involved in many of the women’s organizations.  Marie will be dearly missed by her friends and family.

Marie’s family will be remembering her life privately.  Cremation was private.
