James “Jim” Daniel Gallagher, Sr., age 81, of Mechanicsburg , died at home peacefully and surrounded by his loving family and friends on Friday, June 5, 2015. Jim was born on Thursday, November 2, 1933 in Mt. Braddock, PA to the late John A. Gallagher and Margaret Jane (McDonough) Gallagher. In addition to his parents, Jim is preceded in death by his granddaughter, Jennifer Marie Gallagher, four brothers, and one sister.
Jim’s survivors include his loving wife of 45 years, Margaret Lee (Turner) Gallagher; his four children: James “Butch” Daniel Gallagher, Jr., and his wife, Cindy, of Mt. Pleasant, John Albert Gallagher and his companion, Susie, of FL, Helen Gallagher Volz of York, and Dwayne Joseph Gallagher and his wife, Jodi, of Palmyra; his seven grandchildren: Lisa, Britany, Molly, Skylar, Avery, Caitlin, Megan; his great-grandson, Brock; his three sisters: Dorothy Sosinsky, Margaret Christman, Blanche Jones; and several nieces and nephews.
Jim was a proud United States Army Veteran who retired as a Captain after 21 years of service during which he served on foreign soil in both Korea and Vietnam. His decorations and accolades include the Bronze Star and the unwavering love and devotion of a fiercely proud wife. Following his years in the Army, Jim continued his service to his country as a computer programmer at the Navy Ships Parts Control Center in Mechanicsburg. He was a long-time member and Past Commander (1992 – 1993) of the VFW Memorial Post 6704 in Mechanicsburg. Jim was a jack of all trades who will be remembered for his infectious chuckle and his perfect smile. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was an expert joke teller. Possessing a deep love of music, Jim could often be heard singing and playing his guitar. He was a huge Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers fan. Above all, Jim was a family man who felt great love for his children and grandchildren. He will be missed dearly by all of his friends and family.
All are welcome to join Jim’s family at his viewing on Tuesday, June 9, 2015, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Wednesday, June 10, 2015, from 10:30 a.m. until time of service at 11:30 a.m. at Myers - Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory , 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Pastor Larry Rieck officiating. Burial will follow in Mechanicsburg Cemetery where military honors will be presented by the Cumberland County Honor Guard . Jim’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at Warm Hearts Café , next door to Myers-Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory , immediately following the burial.
