James “Jim” Robert Holland, Jr.
Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, & Great-Grandfather -
James “Jim” Robert Holland, Jr., age 85, of Mechanicsburg, PA and formerly of Charlottesville, VA; New Market, VA; Richmond, VA; and York, PA; passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Friday, April 21, 2017. Jim was born on Thursday, August 6, 1931 in Thomasville, NC to the late James Robert Holland, Sr. and Grace (Brooks) Holland. In addition to his parents, Jim is preceded in death by his siblings: Larry Holland, Elaine Helvin, Margueritte Holland, Iris Thompson, and Elizabeth Holloway.
Jim’s survivors include his loving wife of 47 years, Jean Miller (Burton) Holland; his two children: Elaine Holland and her husband, Paul Dominguez, of York, PA; Gary Holland and his wife, Theresa, of Mechanicsburg, PA; his three grandchildren: Michael Bodell and his wife, Aroonlack, and their children: Jack and Henry of Stratford, NJ; Jeffrey Bodell and his wife, Kacie, and their son, Finn, of Shippensburg, PA; Kristina Holland of Mechanicsburg, PA; and several nieces and nephews.
Jim graduated from Lane High School in Charlottesville as part of the class of 1949, where he played football and was a member of the C-Club. He served for over five years in the Monticello National Guard, Charlottesville and obtained the rank of Sergeant First Class (SFC). Jim also served for two years in the United States Army during the Korean War. He worked as a teamster truck driver for the Mason Dixon Lines and ABF Freight, Carlisle, PA. Jim worked for the two companies for 40 years until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of the Shiloh, PA American Legion Post #791 and Mechanicsburg American Legion Post #109.
Jim enjoyed hunting, salt water fishing, and he was an avid boater. He was also a hobby gunsmith who made numerous hunting and target rifles. Jim loved to read, which he did all the time and would often finish a book in a day or two. He liked to read mystery novels by some of his favorite authors, such as Robert Tannenbaum, Tom Clancy, Vince Flynn, John Sandford, and Lee Child.
All are welcome to join Jim’s family at his viewing on Thursday, April 27, 2017, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home, 5888 St. George Avenue, Crozet, VA 22932. Burial will be held on April 28, 2017 at the Hillsboro Cemetery in Crozet, VA at 11 a.m., with Pastor Jim Hardwick officiating where military honors will be presented by the American Legion Post 74 Honor Guard. Jim’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at the Restoration Restaurant at the Old Trail Golf Club, 5494 Golf Drive, Crozet, VA following the burial.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in celebration of Jim’s life can be made to the American Heart Association, 1019 Mumma Road, Wormleysburg, PA 17043, www.Heart.org or to any veteran’s organization of the donors choosing.
