James “Vogie” Leroy Vogelsong

James “Vogie” Leroy Vogelsong, age 66, of Mechanicsburg, PA, died at the Lebanon VA Medical Center on Monday, January 8, 2018, after struggling with cancer. Vogie was born on Thursday, September 20, 1951 in Harrisburg, PA to the late David Woodrow Vogelsong and Leona Evelyn (Orris) Vogelsong. In addition to his parents, Vogie is preceded in death by his infant brother, Samuel John Vogelsong, and his infant sister, Betty Jane Vogelsong.
Vogie’s survivors include his brother, David Claude Vogelsong and his wife, Michele “Schelly”, of Harrisburg; his sister, Yvonne Louise Rehrer and her husband, James, of Merchantville, NJ; his special and devoted friend, Cynthia “Cindy” Kay Hartman of Shippensburg; and his two nieces: Tracy Weiss-Biddinger and her husband, Frank, and Muriel Kay Rehrer and her partner, Jason Hughes.
Vogie graduated from Cumberland Valley High School as part of the class of 1969. He joined the United States Army and served from 1969 until 1972. Vogie was a proud Vietnam Veteran who served in country in 1970, a full 12 month tour and a two year tour in Schweinfurt, Germany. He was a life member of the: Veteran’s of Foreign Wars (VFW), American Veterans, and the American Legion where he served as a past commander of Post #109 in Mechanicsburg. Vogie retired from the Naval Ships Parts Control Center in Mechanicsburg. He was a long-time member, past board member and resident at the Business Men’s League in Mechanicsburg. He also enjoyed membership in the Eagles and the Moose, both in Carlisle.
Vogie’s friends are welcome to join his family at his viewing on Wednesday, January 10, 2018, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Myers - Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055. Cremation will follow and be private.
All are welcome to join Vogie’s family at his memorial gathering of family and friends on Tuesday, January 16, 2018, from 12:30 p.m. until time of service at 1:30 p.m. at Myers - Buhrig Funeral Home and Crematory, 37 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055; with Celebrant George A. Spangler officiating. Interment will follow in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, where military honors will be presented. Vogie’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship at Funck's Family Restaurant in Annville, PA, immediately following the interment.
The family sends their most heartfelt thanks to everyone at the Lebanon VA Medical Center who so lovingly cared for Vogie during his illness. Contributions in celebration of Vogie’s life can be made to any veteran’s organization of the donor’s choosing.
